Nationals' James Wood: Spectacular when healthy in 2022
Wood put together a .324/.429/.560 batting line with 12 homers, 19 steals and a 47:68 BB:K in 71 Single-A games this season.
While he wasn't quite as spectacular for Fredericksburg after being traded as he had been with Lake Elsinore in the hitter-friendly California League earlier in the year, Wood still had a major breakout in 2022, flashing his high-end power and plus speed. However, wrist and knee injuries combined to limit the 19-year-old's time on the field -- he played just a little over half a season's worth of games. If Wood can put in a fully healthy and similarly productive 2023, he could very well put himself in consideration for the title of No. 1 prospect in baseball.

Nationals' Robert Hassell: Fractures wrist in AFL
Hassell was diagnosed Wednesday with a broken hamate bone in his right wrist and will miss the remainder of the Arizona Fall League, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports.
The 21-year-old outfield prospect will undergo surgery to address the injury and is expected to require 6-to-8 weeks of recovery. Barring any setbacks, Hassell should be 100 percent for spring training, when he'll be entering his first full season as a member of the Nationals organization after he was acquired in August as part of the prospect haul in the deal that sent Juan Soto to San Diego. Hassell was quickly bumped up from the High-A level following his arrival in Washington but struggled in his first taste of Double-A, slashing .213/.303/.287 with a 28.7 percent strikeout rate across 122 plate appearances with Harrisburg.

Nationals' Erick Fedde: Shelled for nine runs
Fedde (6-13) took the loss against the Mets on Wednesday, allowing nine runs on nine hits and two walks over 2.1 innings while striking out one.
It was a short and disastrous afternoon for Fedde in the season finale, as he allowed three runs in all three frames in which he appeared. The nine runs allowed were a season high for the right-hander after he had not allowed more than four runs in any start since Aug 30. He closes 2022 with a 5.81 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 94:58 K:BB over 127 innings.

Nationals' Nelson Cruz: Requires surgery
Cruz, who isn't starting Wednesday against the Mets, will undergo surgery on his left eye around the end of October, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Cruz hasn't played since Sept. 13 due to inflammation in the inner corner of his left eye, but manager Dave Martinez suggested that the 42-year-old could appear as a pinch hitter during Wednesday's regular-season finale. Regardless of whether Cruz appears in Wednesday's matchup, he'll undergo a procedure around the end of the month and expects to resume baseball activities 6-8 weeks later. He doesn't have plans to retire following the season, and it seems possible that he'll be ready to play in time for spring training in 2023.

Nationals' Nelson Cruz: Remains out for season finale
Cruz (eye) isn't starting Wednesday against the Mets.
Cruz has been sidelined over the last several weeks due to a left eye infection, and he'll remain on the bench for Wednesday's season finale. The 42-year-old has slashed .234/.313/.337 with 10 home runs, 64 RBI, 50 runs and four steals in 2022, but he could still log one more plate appearance before the season ends. According to Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com, manager Dave Martinez said that Cruz may feel well enough to make a pinch-hitting appearance Wednesday.

Nationals' Paolo Espino: Crushed in final outing of year
Espino (0-9) couldn't escape the first frame in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets, surrendering seven runs on five hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks in only one-third of an inning.
The 35-year-old right-hander saved his worst for last, giving up back-to-back-to-back homers to begin his final outing of the season. Espino helped hold an injury-wracked Nationals' rotation together down the stretch, but given his age and overall mediocre numbers, he likely won't factor into the team's 2023 plans other as an emergency depth option.

Nationals' Cesar Hernandez: Swipes 10th bag
Hernandez went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets.
The steal was his 10th of the year, the first time he's reached double digits in that category since 2018. Hernandez will be a free agent this offseason, but the 32-year-old won't be in high demand given his .248/.311/.318 slash line through 146 games with only one homer, 34 RBI and 63 runs.

Nationals' Cory Abbott: Stuck with fifth loss
Abbott (0-5) took the loss in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out six.
The 27-year-old will head into the offseason still looking for his first career win in the majors. Abbott tossed 48 of 88 pitches for strikes, and he finishes the season having served up 12 homers in 48 innings for the Nationals (2.25 HR/9) to drive his 5.25 ERA. He's unlikely to seriously compete for a rotation spot in 2023 unless Washington deals with another rash of pitcher injuries.

Nationals' Victor Robles: Dealing with calf tightness
Robles was removed from Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets with right calf tightness, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Robles went 1-for-2 with a double before he was lifted from the matinee, and he was held out of the lineup for the nightcap. It remains to be seen if the 25-year-old will be available for the final game of the regular season Wednesday.

Nationals' CJ Abrams: Managing shoulder injury
Abrams exited Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets with a left shoulder injury and will undergo an MRI on Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Abrams went 1-for-5 with a steal across the two games before he suffered the injury on a diving attempt in the field during the nightcap. Given he has an MRI scheduled Wednesday, the 22-year-old shouldn't be expected to be available for the series finale in New York. Assuming that's the case, Abrams will finish 2022 with a .246/.280/.324 slash line, two home runs, seven stolen bases, 21 RBI and 33 runs across 302 plate appearances split between the Nationals and Padres.

Nationals' Victor Robles: Takes seat for Game 2
Robles is out of the lineup for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Robles has been a lineup regular the past few weeks with Nelson Cruz (eye) banged up, but the outfielder will step out of the lineup for Tuesday's nightcap after he went 1-for-2 with a double during Game 1. Alex Call will man center field and bat seventh in Game 2.

Cruz (eye) is out of the lineup for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Nationals' Stephen Strasburg: Status unclear for 2023
Strasburg's (ribs) status for 2023 is a "mystery," according to general manager Mike Rizzo, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Strasburg has been focusing on strengthening his shoulder since being diagnosed with a stress reaction of his ribs, a side effect of the issue that led to thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in July 2021. Even the team is feigning optimism here, but admitting the obvious, that it's unclear what to expect from Strasburg going forward. He has logged 31.1 innings since the start of the 2020 season.
